It's a smart question — and the honest answer is that for some bookings, your credit card programme works just fine.
But there are a few things worth knowing.
Most bank travel portals book at the standard rate with no added value — meaning you get the room, and nothing more. Through my preferred partner network, the same booking often comes with complimentary breakfast, a room upgrade on arrival, hotel credits, and early check-in or late check-out. The rate is identical. The experience is not.
Points programmes also come with restrictions — blackout dates, limited availability, and properties that simply aren't part of their network. I have no such limitations.
And perhaps most importantly: when something goes wrong mid-trip, your credit card's helpline puts you in a queue. I pick up the phone and have direct access to the hotels executive team.
